I’m overwhelmed with wonder and awe at the deep beauty of the Hopi culture and history, as recounted by Frank Waters in Book of the Hopi, originally published in 1963. It’s still sold widely.

I got a copy on one of my trips to Chaco Canyon a couple of years ago and finally finished it. This culture, and this part of the world, has captured my heart and my next novel (to be called The Four Worlds) will be an exploration of the pre-contact culture that was a thousand years ago centered in Chaco Canyon in northwest New Mexico.

Unfortunately, as with most Native American tribes, their history since contact with European/American culture has been, to say the least, tragic.

I’ll be heading back to Arizona for a couple of weeks in May and am looking forward to diving more deeply into this (these) world(s).

Highly highly recommend this book.
