Is GPT-4 a major step toward AGI (artificial general intelligence)?

Bubeck et al. 2023 is the first detailed study completed of the advanced alien intelligence that we have created: OpenAI’s GPT-4 “large language model.” This transformer model is the basis for ChatGPT and Bing’s Sydney.

These authors conclude that it is an early form of “artificial general intelligence” or AGI, the holy grail of AI developers.

After over a hundred pages of reporting on their testing results in many areas of human knowledge, here are some of the conclusions these authors state:

“We demonstrate that, beyond its mastery of language, GPT-4 can solve novel and difficult tasks that span mathematics, coding, vision, medicine, law, psychology and more, without needing any special prompting. Moreover, in all of these tasks, GPT-4’s performance is strikingly close to human-level performance, and often vastly surpasses prior models such as ChatGPT. Given the breadth and depth of GPT-4’s capabilities, we believe that it could reasonably be viewed as an early (yet still incomplete) version of an artificial general intelligence (AGI) system.”
